Bit belated but I wanted to reflect on a wonderful

Bit belated but I wanted to reflect on a wonderful presentation I gave to @hopkinsnursing Students for Harm Reduction. We were talking about "taking a sex positive sexual history" and I adore the way these students drew connections between their personal experiences, clinical practice, and opportunities for scholarly inquiry.

Nursing students are fantastic at thinking about the expansive ways they can incorporate new information into their practice, whether it's recommending sex toys and aids for their post-surgical patients or advising peers that "lube is good for everyone!" I am excited for the future of nursing as these students start caring for patients independently!

It's wild to me that consumer-facing products for lubricant are better quality nowadays than those found in medical offices. If you see jelly-based lubricant at your gynecologist and you have a sensitive system, consider bringing your own next time. And let your provider know about the sugar hiding in their supplies!

Today was my last blood donation for a long time.

Today was my last blood donation for a long time. Spoiler alert: it didn't go well. My one vein that can consistently be accessed for donation is now having poor flow, possibly from scar tissue. I imagine this is due in part to the connective tissue disorder that I live with.

Grief is always multifaceted but it feels especially so today. On one level, I'm grieving that I won't be able to provide this essential life-giving service for the foreseeable future. We're in an unprecedented blood shortage and it sucks not to be able to contribute while sick patients suffer.

On another level, I'm grieving both my body's limitations and my inability to honor them before I hit a breaking point. Donations have become more difficult for me over the past year. I feared that this might happen. I deal with intrusive thoughts about the difficulties I would encounter should I need regular blood draws or infusions as part of my own medical care. Yet I struggled to give myself adequate breaks between donations and possibly hastened the situation I'm in now. It's frustrating to feel my body's limitations so acutely, but more frustrating still to feel like this is a pattern of disrespecting my own physical needs in an effort to perpetually give more.

I know intellectually that I do not owe blood or time or money or suffering as rent for the privilege of living on this planet. I know intellectually that my body deserves rest. However I struggle to honor that need, especially when the amount of rest is more than I want it to be.

I don't know that I have a tidy conclusion to this post. Donate blood if you can without hurting yourself. Rest more. Grieve your limitations, rage, write about it, repeat. Listen to your body because in all likelihood it's screaming at you too.

It is with renewed energy that I updated the Intim

It is with renewed energy that I updated the Intimate Health Consulting website with "our new articulation of why." When I started IHC, I created promotional materials that emphasized the practical, business savvy reasons to care about sexual health and marginalized populations. But over the years, I've been gratified to work with providers across specialties who are still tapped into the altruism that brought them to medicine. It seems fitting to update our materials to reflect that spirit.

Most folks I know came into medicine because they cared about patients. They wanted to make the world a little better. I want to honor that, in spite of how broken the system is and how burned out so many of us are. Deep down, we just want to do right by people.
